Frequently Asked Questions
These are some Frequenty Asked Questions about our products and services.
Please use the links below:
General
Q1.
Can connectors be disconnected under load?

Answer to Q1.
Always isolate the electrical supply before carrying out any work on the electrical installation, this includes the disconnection of connectors.

Q2.
How do I purchase spares / upgrades?

Answer to Q2.
Once you have established which products you wish to replace, please contact MK through this website.
The products will be available through your local MK stockist

Q3.
How do you extend or add to the system?

Answer to Q3.
This will depend on exactly what type of extension you wish to carry out.
Some options are:
- Spur from a single socket using a socket with 2 connections
- Enter the circuit at a connection point, see drawing for possible connection points and access
- A major circuit extension, such as a conservatory etc, will require an additional circuit there will be spare way in the consumer unit for this
If your home has been wired with the MK Flexible Wiring System then please contact your electrician for further advice.

Q4.
What are the leadtimes for delivery?

Answer to Q4.
Typically, initial delivery will be approximately 4-6 weeks, from receipt of order.
Standard products for spares and 'add ons' are available next day if required.
MK Wiring Systems endeavours to be flexible to your project requirements at all times.

Q5.
What does MMC stand for?

Answer to Q5.
MMC stands for Modern Methods of Construction. The term is used to emcompasses a variety of 'new' build approaches - technique or product.

Q6.
What is the maximum number of connections on a lighting hub?

Answer to Q6.
Lighting hubs can house up to ten connectors, allowing for four 1way switched lights.
In general two or three hubs will be required per floor of a typical three bedroom house.

Q7.
What is the warranty period?

Answer to Q7.
The MK Flexible Wiring System comes with a 10 year warranty. The system is also recognised by the NICEIC, NHBC and Zurich

Products
Q1.
Can data outlets be included in the system?

Answer to Q1.
MK Electric will provide the data outlet plates to ensure a continuous aesthetic. However, due to possible signal degradation pluggable data outlets are not available.

Q2.
How can you have a 32A ring main with a 20A connector?

Answer to Q2.
It is very common to utilise 2.5mmsq 20A cable for a 32A ring main. The design of the installation is such, that the load is balanced across the circuit, so no more than 20A would flow in one leg of the final circuit, resulting in a safe installation.
MK also provide a unique clip, which will join the connectors at the consumer unit, ensuring that both ends of the ring circuit are connected.

Q3.
How can you wire a cooker?

Answer to Q3.
Many cookers are supplied with a 13A plug, these can simply be plugged into a socket on a dedicated 20A radial circuit.
Cookers requiring a feed of greater than 20A will need to be hard wired.

Q4.
What is the conductor size for power circuits?

Answer to Q4.
Power circuits utilise black insulated cable sized at 2.5mmsq

Q5.
What is the fire rating of flame retardant boxes?

Answer to Q5.
Flame retardant boxes are fitted with an intumescent gasket to give fire protection in accordance with BS 476 Part 22 1987. In a fire situation, the intumescent gasket will fill the box void, providing protection against the passage of fire for 60 minutes. This is the requirement for party walls.

Q6.
What is the maximum power consumption of a 32A ring and a 20A radial cricuit?

Answer to Q6.
The maximum power consumption is:
For a 20A Radial - 4.4kW
for a 32A Ring - 7kW

Q7.
What is the maximum rating of a radial circuit and how many sockets can you have on the circuit?

Answer to Q7.
For a radial circuit using 2.5mmsq cable the maximum rating is 20A.
There is actually no limit on the number of outlets, however, the circuit will be limited to a floor area of 50msq.

Services
Q1.
How long does the training take?

Answer to Q1.
MK tailor the training programme to meet individual needs. Typically, the training can take between a couple of hours and a full day, depending on the experience of the operators. The training will always include a practical element.

Q2.
What do the different colours on the drawings mean?

Answer to Q2.
The MK Wiring Systems technical support team utilise three colours within wiring design drawings to identify circuits, they are:
Blue - Power (2.5mmsq Black cable)
Green - Lighting (1.5mmsq White cable 3 core)
Red - Lighting (1.5mmsq White cable 4 core)

Q3.
What is the standard turnaround for design work?

Answer to Q3.
Wherever possible MK Wiring Systems will complete a design within 2 weeks from receipt of drawings.
